Young, Leinart, Cutler

From what I can tell the Nashville sports media is in 24/7 coverage of Vince Young.   (For reference, even the Huntsville sports radio station talked to the AP’s Teresa Walker about Young.   Any time a story gets on that station in September that’s not about how ‘Bama or Auburn looks in practice this week, you know that story’s BIG TIME.)

I wish Mr. Young the best off the field, and I know that pulling for others to fail isn’t a desirable character trait.   But I can’t help feeling a little vindicated on behalf of the 11th pick and third QB chosen in the 2006 NFL Draft, Jay Cutler.    While all Nashville seems to be in a state of buyer’s remorse regarding Young, and Matt Leinart has gotten benched in Glendale, Denver fans and media appear pretty happy with Cutler’s performance to start off 2008.

CFN had a nice item about Ted Cain’s playcalling - is it fair to say you heard it here first? - on Monday and followed it up with panelist Matthew Zemek calling Vanderbilt the season’s best unknown story so far.

The Nashville Scene, a weekly entertainment paper, had a cover story on VU football that touched off a digression about the no-cursing rule on VandySports.

Also from VS, force10jc’s excellent Rice scouting report shows how hard it is to get people to reply to that kind of solid content on a message board.   (I admit, I don’t know enough about Rice to agree or disagree with force10jc.)    Also be sure to check out the Parliament, Rice’s most active forum.

Being well within the Broncos empire, I can confirm that Denver is THRILLED with Jay Cutler. It’s not even a question as to who got the best out of the QB sweepstakes in ‘06. Young has been the beneficiary of a solid running game and great defense, two things the Broncos have been without since Jay became the starter in Denver.

If early returns mean anything, the Broncos could have a servicable running game, servicable defense, and extremely dynamic passing game this year … who knows, maybe Jay can get them back over the hump. I think many around here are secretly expecting a statement game against the Chargers tomorrow - Huntsville native Philip Rivers (the beneficiary of the leagues’ best running game and great defense over the past two years) talked a LOT of smack on Cutler last year … and I suspect the Broncos have not forgotten, and are collectively ready to put big mouth in his place.
