SEC Power Poll - after Week 2

September 7th, 2008 by philipvu94 · 2 Comments

  1. Georgia - Phil Steele rates CMU (59) not far behind Miami, FL (46). That’s reason enough for a change at the top.
  2. Florida - Is Miami really that much better than expected? Let’s see if they win the ACC.
  3. Alabama - Post-Clemson letdown was predictable, really.
  4. Auburn - Hasn’t shown us much yet.
  5. LSU - Troy will be a lot tougher amidst the SEC schedule in November.
  6. Ole Miss - Nice effort. I’m convinced; Orgeron left some players.
  7. Tennessee - Open date gives Vol fans time to stew.
  8. Vanderbilt - I’m biased, but leading the SEC East has gotta get you out of the bottom third.
  9. Kentucky - Louisville < S Carolina and Norfolk << Miami, OH.
  10. South Carolina - Are they really terrible, or is Vanderbilt pretty decent? Time will tell.
  11. Arkansas - Struggling to beat a Sun Belt program: That means I-A, so that’s progress!
  12. Miss State - Far be it from me to look askance at any win…..

Good God, man… Have a little more faith in our Dores. This is the only time of year that we can be ranked in the top half, and the other sites (UGA, USC, ESPN) have done so, but not yours… say it ain’t so.

The reason I hate all early-season CFB polls is because it’s not clear whether their purpose is to predict the future or to reward teams for their performance so far. I tend to try to split the difference.

If we’re rewarding VU, then I agree we should be a lot higher. The only teams with bigger wins so far are Alabama and *arguably* Florida. So I think you’d have to put VU 3rd if the poll were clearly intended to be non-predictive.

For me, seeing us 1-0 and atop the SEC East is mighty sweet. Everything else is just opinions.
