There’s now a non-trivial probability that VU will end up with a 4-seed or better, so I may as well start considering possibilities of getting to convenient NCAA sites.
Obviously for the first weekend we want Birmingham, with the less desirable choice of Little Rock, Raleigh, and Tampa, in that order.
Little Rock isn’t going to happen [...]

Random thoughts: Vanderbilt 72-69 Tennessee
February 27th, 2008 · 2 Comments
I just got in, am fighting a cold, and need plenty of sleep before work tomorrow. Let’s see if I can make myself keep this short!
The stat of the game was 8 VU turnovers, the fewest against UTK this year. Congrats of course to Shan for his 32, but congrats also to [...]

Baseball fever!: Oregon State 1-8 Vanderbilt
February 23rd, 2008 · No Comments
Given that basketball season is reaching its best part, I’m surprised that the start of the baseball season has so captured my imagination. Guess that’s what happens when you follow a preseason Top 10 team, right?
It was a nice win in Tempe. Mikey Minor was lights-out, of course, but what really got [...]

Baseball season is here!
February 21st, 2008 · No Comments
I don’t have much analysis to add here, but I’ll see if I can find someone to write up a season preview. The next month or so is the greatest time of the year for Vanderblit athletics, with men’s and women’s hoops headed for the NCAAs and our consensus Top 10 baseball team [...]

UAB-Memphis: Some quasi-neutral thoughts
February 17th, 2008 · No Comments
Last night I went to Birmingham with my aunt for the UAB-Memphis game.  The tickets were a Christmas present, because she claims Memphis as her alma mater.  Here are a few idle thoughts about the experience:
Bartow Arena is a pretty nice venue built in the late-80s then christened sometime in the [...]

The surreal game last Tuesday
February 16th, 2008 · No Comments
My sporadic blogging schedule has its disadvantages. If I don’t make it a point to blog when I get home from a Vanderbilt game, after a little bit of time elapses and the message boards have run their course then I end up thinking, “Ah, screw it, I have nothing new to say anyway.” [...]

South Carolina - Vanderbilt: Did Kevin Stallings just flat outthink Dave Odom?
February 10th, 2008 · 1 Comment
I’ve always found chess a funny metaphor for key coaching decisions in sports events — I’d use poker, but then everything reminds me of poker.  Regardless of your game of choice, it seems Kevin Stallings won at it on the last play yesterday in Columbia.
I thought this when reading this morning’s game wrap-up [...]

Georgia - Vanderbilt pregame: The true tests begin tonight
February 6th, 2008 · No Comments
I need to keep this brief, because I’ve just not had a lot of time to blog.  But suffice it to say, tonight we get an important piece of evidence for one of these two propositions:
Vanderbilt’s four losses in January were because of the strength of competition, especially on the road. Â [...]

Vanderbilt - Auburn: We’re so not a Top 25 team
February 2nd, 2008 · No Comments
Embarrassingly, this was the first VU hoops game I made this season despite having season tickets! I certainly got an entertaining game for my efforts, although VU in some ways played like a struggling team just trying to hang onto its season. Here are some random thoughts:
This was basically just a reprise [...]
